being normal....normal beings

“The real hopeless victims of mental illness are to be found among those who appear to be most normal. "Many of them are normal because they are so well adjusted to our mode of existence, because their human voice has been silenced so early in their lives, that they do not even struggle or suffer or develop symptoms as the neurotic does." They are normal not in what may be called the absolute sense of the word; they are normal only in relation to a profoundly abnormal society. Their perfect adjustment to that abnormal society is a measure of their mental sickness. These millions of abnormally normal people, living without fuss in a society to which, if they were fully human beings, they ought not to be adjusted.”
??? Aldous Huxley,

With DID it is clear that one or more alters or parts takes a organising or defending role and can appear fully functional. For many people a personality is constructed, consciously or not, and may not be part of a multiple personality, that appears normal, the a student, the perfectionist worker, married with children, in order to hide and protect the real self and to not have to process the inner turmoil often created by childhood trauma. For many survivors of child sexual abuse who appear asymptomatic it is only the breakdown 30 or 40 years later where they disclose that they have always felt dead inside and their jobs and relationships where meaningless to them. I would suggest that being asymptomatic post trauma is a serious symptom and that it is always a normal human reaction to experience stress post trauma and for those who dont this is an obvious sign of an disorder.
