Single personality disorder We are often told that some survivors of care more resilient than others. That they are able to move forward with their lives and also that as children it may do more harm than good to subject them to therapy or other interventions. Yet we often see men in their 40's 50's or older who suddenly can no longer function and need support. We believe that just as with dissociative identity disorder (did) is a response to abuse where multiple parts or alters are created to defend the survivor to enable them to function. So the construction of a single personality is used in the same way. The perfectionist A student good husband father colleague etc is presented in order to suppress the memories of abuse. Our evidence is obviously anecdotal as this is ignored by mental health professionals until the crisis occurs. It is our belief that instead of talking of resilience which is abusive to those who are not we instead need a reevaluation and understand that no symptom is a symptom.
